Mormon Helping Hands serve in Colorado flood relief

Members of the Boulder Colorado Stake wore Mormon Helping Hands vests and lifted many people’s spirits on Sept. 29, 2013, in their ongoing efforts to help neighbors clean up their properties damaged by the flood. This video puts faces and voices with the vests. Continue reading

Good Fathers

The Monday after Father’s Day, I watched the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s 2012 Father’s Day special that had been published less than a week earlier on YouTube. The words and music uncovered memories and feelings I had not expressed before. I hope it’s not too late now.

The new father I wish to honor held his newborn daughter in his arms and looked into her eyes with deep love and awe. As the work began of raising her, he shouldered new responsibilities while juggling his university studies, full-time work and other family needs. He carried extra laundry to the laundromat on weekly trips he and his wife made and later used the family’s limited funds to buy a washing machine.

A couple of years later, the young father held another precious newborn daughter with loving tenderness and joy. Love doubled in their home as did demands on his time and resources. After graduation, he secured a new job and moved the family into their own home. He worked at his job then tamed the weeds at home and made the yard a lovely place. He put in clothesline poles and strung the lines. A dryer was out of the question.

From humanitarian dentist to dental missionary

A 5-year-old Guatemalan girl told Dr. Richard L. Call, a dentist from Westminster, Colo., in a temporary dental clinic in Guatemala,” I just want to eat my food and not have it hurt. Can you help me?” Call said, “When I looked inside her mouth, I found 12 abscessed teeth. The rest all had cavities. Broke my heart.”

This little girl would have suffered throughout her life without help. Her nutrition and over-all health would have been affected. I’m glad to say humanitarian dentists and the Hirsche Smiles Foundation came to her aid.

Many thanks to Call and his wife, LeeAnn Call, Dr. Garry Brown and his wife, Ann Brown (from Utah), Dr. Lee Olson and his wife, Peggy Olson, (formerly from Broomfield, but now from Utah). Many thanks, too, to Dr. Wayne Tomkinson and his wife, Suzanne Tomkinson (from Arizona), and Dr. Paul Fillmore and JoAnne Fillmore, (currently full-time dental missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

Caring teachers improve education

The quality of our nation’s teachers is more basic to excellence in education than even textbooks and curricula though the latter two are also extremely important.
A caring teacher makes all the difference.

My children had many such teachers in the Boulder Valley School District as do students today. Instead of telling these stories here, however, I want to share “The Teddy Story” by Elizabeth Silance Ballard, the same story Wayne Boss told at the recent Boulder Colorado Stake’s “Most Inspirational Teacher” Awards Night. Though the piece is fiction, this story is relevant as we want to maintain and improve educaton. Due to space, I paraphrase parts and quote the author.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir helps NSCD

As I waited on June 29 at Red Rocks for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir benefit concert for the National Sports Center for the Disabled, a front blew away the afternoon heat. Light breezes and a sunset of reds, oranges and yellows replaced a smattering of raindrops. The occasional thunder and lightning moved into the distance. Continue reading

My Mormon Tabernacle Choir dream

I hope bad weather stays away on Monday, June 29, because the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will perform at the Red Rocks Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. Concert proceeds will benefit the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

I am so excited! And, you can be sure I will be there! I admit I’ve had a dream since I was young of being a Choir member or singing with it.
